Tracks We Share: Contemporary Art of the Pilbara
Tracks We Share opened at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in March 2022 Sharmila worked on the early stages of curatorial and project development including the commissioning of key exhibition pieces. The collaboration between Western Australian non-profit arts and cultural organisation FORM; The Art Gallery of Western Australia; Aboriginal art centres Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group, Martumili Artists, Spinifex Hill Studio, and Yinjaa-Barni Art; and independent artists Katie West, Curtis Taylor, and Jill Churnside included 70 artists and over 190 artworks.
Art activity as a professional, commercial practice did not flourish in the Pilbara until the early 2000s. Now, it is an intrinsic part of cultural life and contemporary culture, radiating from the key art centres located in the region. Despite this, and in contrast to other regions of Western Australia, no exhibition or publication mapping the Pilbara Aboriginal art historical context or development of the region's Aboriginal art existed prior to Tracks We Share. The project provided a platform that encouraged the interaction of contemporary artists, audiences, academics and communities in both regional, remote and metro centres, to create dynamic stories through a mix of mediums, professional development and learning programs.
